La Palma is the site of the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, soon to begin building one of the WORLD'S three largest telescopes, some 10 metres in diameter. The Canarian Institute of Astrophysics is keenly awaiting it's completion.
The Canary Islands are noted as being one of the world's best observation sites because of it's clean air and favorable visibility attracting astrophysicians from around the world. The other two largest telescopes are Mount Keck in Hawaii and Cerro Paranal in Chile.
