Once known as THE END OF THE WORLD in Columbus's time, El Hierro has been designated as one of the WORLD's few Biospheres, because of it's unique flora and fauna, this was welcome news to the Canary Islands. On El Hierro can be found the Sabinas, a juniper tree torn into a twisting bent shape by the constant trade winds across the island, also home to the Garaoe Tree or Holy Tree, which has the unusual ability to distil precious water from the AIR! The Salmor Lizard, once thought to be extinct, is also alive and well on El Hierro, and is now part of a breeding program, so that we don't loose him again. Not to be missed are the truly breathtaking views across fertile valleys and mountains covered with pine and giant beech trees. Despite it's size, El Hierro has several very good hotels that can boast prize winning cuisine and excellent local wine.
