The capitol is San Sabastion de la Gomera, so called because it was founded on the feast day of San Sabastion. It's most famous resident was Christopher Columbus who lived there whilst preparing for his voyage of discovery to the Americas, his 15th century house is now a museum open to the public. The national park of Garajonay has a visitors centre that has information about the Island and a workshop demonstrating local crafts which are also for sale, a good opportunity to pick up some original souvenirs. Close by is the popular seaside resort of Valle Gran Rey where there are coffee shops along the sea front to sit and look across the beautiful ocean towards Tenerife. Don't miss out on taking a drive. There are numerous photo stops and the views are breathtaking with lovely hidden valleys. Locals still tap the palm trees for honey, which after processing by boiling into a syrup, is mixed with local white wine to produce a delicious and refreshing drink called Mistela. Hermigua that was once a busy centre for weaving is now a visitor centre and where all the crafts produced are for sale. Along the way there are ample places to stop for refreshments and a chance to sample the local food and wine. There are frequent daily ferries from Los Cristianos Tenerife, for details of timetables look on page INTER ISLAND TRAVEL.
